Agentic Commerce represents a clear shift in how commerce is conducted in Shopify. When AI agents can go from recommendation to action, the shopping experience moves from websites to conversations.

Headless on Shopify means you use Shopify as your transaction engine (products, orders, checkout), but build your own frontend. Shopify offers two clear paths: the meaningful Hydrogen stack (with Oxygen hosting) or “bring your own stack” via the Storefront API and the Headless channel in Admin.

Shopify and OpenAI enable direct purchases in ChatGPT. OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout – a chat-based purchase built on the Agentic Commerce protocol with Stripe. First up are Etsy sellers in the US, but Shopify stores are advertised as “coming soon,” and the purchase happens without leaving the conversation. Merchants remain the merchant of record , orders land in Shopify Admin, and the store still owns the customer relationship.
